Oregon's dazzling secret lake offers swimming, berry-picking, and kayak-in island camping.

Just spent a couple nights at Summit Lake in Oregon and it honestly felt like a dream. You can literally paddle your kayak to your own little island and set up camp under Diamond Peak. The water is insanely clear, like, you can see your kayak’s shadow on the lakebed. We even found Berry Island and snagged some late-summer huckleberries. It’s remote and not exactly luxury camping, but the views and solitude are unmatched.

That said the mosquitoes are no joke. We went late August and still got ambushed. Bring industrial-strength spray or wait until September. Anyone else been here? Did you brave the bumpy road in a sedan or did you camp mainland-style at the Summit Lake campground? Share your favorite hidden lake spots too!
