Oahu Rail Project Means 5 Years of Lane Closures on Nimitz Highway

Just saw the news starting August 18, Nimitz Hwy on Oahu will lose a lane in each direction between ‘Awa and Bishop St for the next five years due to the City Center Rail Project. That’s 24/7 closures and includes Iwilei Road too.

Honestly, this is going to be brutal for locals and tourists alike. Nimitz is one of the busiest routes into downtown and Waikiki. Detours through King or Beretania are being suggested, but we all know traffic there is already rough during peak hours. I feel for the folks commuting daily and travelers headed to/from the airport.

How are you all planning to deal with this? Anyone got tips for alternate routes or avoiding the worst of it?
