Wonsan Kalma sounds like something from a movie set. A 4km beachfront, waterparks, shopping malls, and beach umbrellas in a country still cut off from most of the world. I can’t decide if it’s eerie, fascinating, or both.
The idea of kicking back with a cold drink on a North Korean beach while Kim Jong Un watches from a villa nearby just feels bizarre. And yet, here it is. It won’t likely draw Western travelers any time soon, but I’d be curious to hear from anyone who’s actually gone. Did it feel like a normal resort or something more staged?
