I recently flew with Spirit Airlines for a trip to New York for my son’s birthday. While the outbound flight went smoothly with no issues, the return journey was extremely problematic. The original return flight, scheduled for 9 PM, was delayed multiple times until after midnight and eventually canceled around 11 PM.
After waiting for hours at Newark Airport with limited amenities, I was informed at the Spirit counter that the next available rebooking option was several days later. Since that was not feasible, I opted for a refund of the return ticket. With no accommodation or immediate alternative provided, I had to arrange my own lodging near the airport and book a last-minute flight with another airline to return home, resulting in significant additional expenses.
Overall, the experience led to unexpected stress, inconvenience, and substantial out-of-pocket costs. I’m sharing this experience to highlight the challenges faced during the disruption and to help others consider potential risks when choosing budget airlines, especially regarding delays, cancellations, and limited support.
