My spooky, awesome trek through Washington’s Ape Cave

Just tackled the eerie and fascinating Ape Cave in Washington, and it legit felt like stepping into the opening scene of a horror movie. The lava tube stretches for 2 miles underground, pitch black with zero lighting you’re on your own down there with just a lantern and some nerve. It’s not like the usual guided caves with polished paths and signage. Ape Cave is raw, quiet, and totally otherworldly. That first chill when you step off the mossy staircase into the dark? Unreal.

I stuck to the lower trail, which is the easier route, but now I’m tempted to go back and try the upper scramble past the lava fall. It’s wild to think this tube was formed by Mount St. Helens almost 2,000 years ago
