I recently had a 20-hour layover in Istanbul and decided to take advantage of Turkish Airlines' complimentary hotel stay offer. Overall, the experience was positive and gave me plenty of time to explore the city.
Before departing, I purchased a three-day eSIM plan to stay connected. After arriving at the airport around 2:00 PM, I took an official taxi to my hotel, preferring convenience over negotiating fares. The journey took about an hour, and although the fare was higher than expected, I was happy to pay for a hassle-free ride.
I stayed at the Nidya Hotel Galataport, which was in a great location. During the afternoon and evening, I spent time walking around the city, enjoying local food, and taking a ferry ride. I highly recommend the ferry, as it offers excellent views of Istanbul and is an affordable way to visit different parts of the city. I also purchased a transit card that can be used on ferries, buses, and trams.
The next morning, I returned to the airport by taxi. This trip was noticeably cheaper than the first one, likely due to differences in tolls or routing. Airport security was straightforward, and I was able to keep my electronics, liquids, and shoes in place throughout the screening process.
The hotel itself was comfortable, and its location was one of its strongest features. The ferry terminal, restaurants, and various attractions were all within walking distance. I paid for everything using a credit card during my stay.
One small issue was that my eSIM data ran out before my flight, and I couldn't top it up, so I managed without mobile data for the remainder of the morning.
If I were to do the same layover again, I would probably use the airport bus instead of a taxi. While the taxi saved time, the bus is much more economical, and the additional travel time would likely be worth the savings. Overall, the complimentary hotel program turned a long layover into an enjoyable opportunity to experience the city.
