My Hidden Paradise Find in Northern California – New Bullards Bar Reservoir

I just got back from exploring New Bullards Bar Reservoir near Camptonville, and I’m still in awe. Imagine 55 miles of Caribbean-blue shoreline tucked into the Tahoe National Forest, with trails that weave through pines and open to panoramic water views. I took the Bullards Bar Loop – 14 miles of easy inclines, waterfalls, and the occasional raptor sighting. Pro tip: if you’re bringing a dog, watch for ticks, even in cooler months.

I camped at Dark Day Campground, which is right by the water and perfect for swimming, kayaking, and launching boats. The fishing scene was just as amazing – I met locals pulling in trout and Kokanee salmon like it was nothing. The best part? It still feels under-the-radar, so you can find peaceful coves all to yourself.

Anyone else been here? I’m already plotting my return trip.
