Being on the United upgrade waitlist is honestly a test of patience. I’ve had times where I was sitting at 4th on the list with 4 open J seats, thinking it was a lock and still didn’t clear until right before boarding. Other times, I’ve been sure it was hopeless and somehow got the upgrade at the gate.
Calling the 1K desk doesn’t always help much either they usually just say it’s system controlled. The funny part is how unpredictable it feels; one flight clears days out, the next makes you sweat until your boarding group gets called.
