I recently landed at Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) airport as a foreign solo traveler and wanted to share my experience since Reddit has been really helpful during my trip.
My flight arrived around 5 AM, and I was among the first passengers to disembark. While walking toward immigration, I could already see another flight’s passengers arriving, so I expected things to get busy.
I had pre-booked a Fast Track service through Viator for about $20. Since I arrived early, I likely would have cleared immigration in around 20 to 30 minutes anyway, but Fast Track made the process extremely quick. I met the agent easily near the signage area where other pickup services were waiting. She only scanned my boarding pass and then guided me a short distance, maybe 15 to 20 steps, to a priority immigration lane used for diplomats and other categories. A staff member there let me through immediately, and the agent left right after. The entire interaction probably lasted only a couple of minutes, and I cleared immigration in about 3 minutes total.
Looking back, I’m not sure the Fast Track was really necessary, but I booked it just to avoid any risk of long queues. It did help me exit the airport very quickly, which meant I was able to get a Grab taxi without any rush.
This was also my first time using Grab. I downloaded the app in advance and added my card details, which made booking easy once I stepped outside the airport. A driver was available immediately, though it took me a few minutes to locate the exact pickup point. The driver sent a photo of nearby landmarks to help me find him, which was useful.
We did not share a common spoken language, but communication still worked through text translation tools. I also tried asking locals for directions, but most people I encountered did not speak English, so having a translation app was essential.
I had expected heavy traffic into District 3 and planned for about an hour travel time, but the ride only took around 15 minutes. The fare was about 105,000 VND, which is under $5 USD. I had considered booking a private airport transfer in advance for $20 to $40, but I’m glad I didn’t since Grab was much cheaper and easy to use.
Overall, it was a smooth arrival experience and I hope this helps other travelers planning a similar trip.
