Stayed at Miraval Arizona Jan 3 to 5 for an anniversary trip and I’m still annoyed thinking about it. Used an ultimate night plus an extra night and had built a whole Tucson trip around this stay. Big mistake.
We were “upgraded” to a Sunrise double and the room was rough. Blood stains on pillows, hair in the outdoor shower drain, missing fire pit controller, chipped paint everywhere, concrete falling apart, patio door handle coming loose, missing shower parts, and you could literally see into the bathroom from outside through a gap. They just swapped pillows and called it a day. No room move, no real apology. I’ve stayed at plenty of Hyatt Places that were in better shape.
Activities were another disappointment. Did a mix of free and paid ones like the pole jump, cooking class, archery, and horse experience. Even paying over $1k per person per night, most activities still cost extra. And they’re group based. A two hour block might mean you get 10 to 15 minutes of actual hands on time. Felt like terrible value even paying out of pocket.
The whole resort feels heavily geared toward women. Gift shops full of overpriced gems and accessories, lots of yoga and similar activities. Not necessarily bad, just very skewed. Ratio felt like one guy for every five women.
Front desk was pretty unhelpful. One person didn’t even know dining hours. Another refused a noon checkout even though our last activity ended at 11 and the place was clearly half empty.
Food was very underwhelming. Small portions, mediocre quality. Had an oxidized avocado toast one morning that looked sad. If I were paying cash for this stay, I’d be furious at what’s bundled into the rate.
Before leaving, a PR person promised to wipe activity charges, give points, and follow up. Filled out the feedback form right away. Two weeks later, nothing. No credits, no points, no contact. Even Hyatt support just says it’s an independent property and goes quiet.
Cell service is basically nonexistent and wifi is spotty. Fine for a weekend, but I can’t imagine staying a full week completely disconnected not by choice.
Overall, this place focuses on “wellness” but left me feeling anything but. I wouldn’t go back even for free, and I have zero interest in trying other Miraval properties after this being my first experience.
If you’re going to Tucson, skip this and do things like Mount Lemmon Sky Center, Biosphere 2, Titan Missile Museum, the aircraft boneyard, or just enjoy the national parks.
