Checked our accounts a few months back and realized our 13 year old was actually pretty close to hitting Silver. Not close enough for SAF to make sense, but close enough that a cheap mileage run might push him over. Found a super low fare during a sale, paid with points, and booked us a same day out-and-back.
We even got upgraded to first on both legs. Declined the outbound one because the seats weren’t together and the whole point was hanging out, not sitting apart. Ended up in Premium, played cards, wandered the airport a bit, and he got to try the famous FC cheeseburger on the return.
My spouse thinks the whole thing is weird, but it felt like a fun day together and now the kid has status that’ll help all of us when we travel as a family. For the cost, totally worth it.
