I recently flew United from Chicago to San Francisco and was seated in 11E, a middle seat.
During the flight, I discovered that the under-seat storage space was almost completely blocked by onboard equipment installed beneath the seat in front of me. There was only a few inches of usable space left, nowhere near enough for a standard backpack.
As a result, I had to keep my backpack between my legs for most of the 4.5-hour flight, which made the trip much more uncomfortable.
I understand aircraft layouts can vary, but this seems like a particularly poor design choice, especially for a middle seat where personal space is already limited.
