I was on a flight from Tokyo Haneda to New York when something pretty terrifying happened during taxi for takeoff.
There was suddenly a loud bang, followed by flames and thick smoke inside the cabin. Honestly one of the scariest moments I’ve ever experienced on a plane. It turned out to be a laptop that had caught fire.
The flight attendants reacted immediately and handled it really well, using fire extinguishers to get things under control quickly. The plane stopped, and we sat on the tarmac for about two hours while firefighters and aviation authorities came onboard to deal with the situation and document everything.
Eventually, we were taken back to the terminal at Haneda Airport. The process was surprisingly smooth, they set up a dedicated lane so we could re-enter Japan quickly, collect our bags from a separate carousel, and go through a simplified customs process.
We had to arrange our own hotel for the night, but were given instructions to claim reimbursement (up to 30,000 yen per person). By the time we left the airport, American Airlines had already rebooked everyone onto new flights for the next day.
Overall, while the incident itself was scary, the crew’s professionalism and how everything was handled afterward really stood out in a positive way
