Applied to renew my Malaysia digital nomad visa about 4 months before it was set to expire, thinking that would be plenty of time.
Instead, just 5 days before the visa expired, MDEC emailed saying they couldn’t process the renewal for at least another 6–8 weeks and that I needed to leave the country.
The only temporary option they offered was a 7-day Special Pass, and even that required showing a flight ticket out of the country.
Ended up having to leave Malaysia even though the renewal had been submitted months in advance. Really frustrating since one of the reasons I chose Malaysia was because it supposedly had a clear and legal visa path for remote workers.
Hard to imagine dealing with this situation if you had a family there too.
