Just got back from my second safari and something about the experience felt different.
My first safari years ago was a small, basic camp. Early wakeups, dusty drives, coffee in a metal mug before sunrise. Long stretches where nothing happened while the guide tracked footprints. It felt raw and unpredictable.
This time I stayed at one of the luxury lodges you see all over Instagram. Beautiful place, great food, plunge pool, perfect sundowners.
But the game drives started to feel strange.
Every time an animal was spotted, guides were calling it in on the radio and suddenly 8–10 vehicles would show up around the same lion or leopard. At one sighting I counted 12 jeeps around a single leopard.
The sightings were amazing, but it started to feel less like being in the wild and more like a carefully managed experience.
I actually missed the long quiet drives where nothing happens and then suddenly a giraffe just appears on the road.
Curious what others think. Do luxury safaris improve the experience, or do they take away some of the “wild” feeling?
