I’m fairly new to staying at luxury resorts and I’m trying to understand proper tipping etiquette before an upcoming trip.
In everyday situations in the U.S., I’m comfortable tipping generously (around 25–30% at restaurants, small tips for coffee/ice cream, etc.). However, when traveling, I often feel unprepared and unsure of what’s appropriate.
Since resort stays can be quite expensive, I also understand that staff may not directly benefit much from the room rate, so I want to be respectful and prepared.
We’ll be traveling to Costa Rica later this year and staying at places like Nayara Tented Camp and the Waldorf Astoria Costa Rica Punta Cacique.
I expect there will be frequent services like golf cart transport, room service requests, and housekeeping/turndown service.
My main questions:
Should I tip every time we use a golf cart service?
Is it expected to leave tips daily for housekeeping or turndown service?
What’s the general tipping approach at high-end resorts in Costa Rica?
Looking for guidance on what’s considered standard or appropriate so I can be prepared.
