Lufthansa Technik, in collaboration with BASF Coatings, has begun the certification process to apply its AeroSHARK technology—a sharkskin-inspired riblet film designed to reduce aerodynamic drag and decrease fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by about 1%—to Airbus A330ceo models. This marks the first time the biomimetic film will be introduced on an Airbus aircraft, targeting both the fuselage and engine nacelles under a Supplemental Type Certificate. With a global fleet of approximately 1,000 A330s in operation, the initiative holds significant potential for cost savings and environmental benefits. Certification is expected to be completed in 2026.
