Lufthansa grounded its entire Airbus A380 fleet during the 2020 pandemic due to low travel demand and high operating costs, initially planning to retire the aircraft permanently. However, after supply chain delays affected deliveries of new aircraft like the A350, 787, and 777X, the airline was forced to reactivate several A380s to meet surging post-pandemic demand. As of late 2025, Lufthansa continues to operate the superjumbo on select high-demand routes, though its long-term future remains uncertain as the carrier works toward simplifying its widebody fleet and transitioning to more fuel-efficient models.
