Lufthansa 747 Makes U-Turn to Chicago After Gear Malfunction

Talk about a dramatic takeoff, I was on Lufthansa flight LH431 from Chicago to Frankfurt when we stopped climbing and circled back. Turns out, the 747-8’s landing gear wouldn’t retract after takeoff. The pilots calmly told us it was a gear issue, and we ended up dumping fuel over Lake Michigan before landing safely back at O’Hare.

Honestly, the crew handled it like pros. We were rebooked quickly, and no one panicked. Still, seeing the gear stuck mid-flight made me appreciate all the training and safety protocols behind the scenes.

Have you ever been on a flight that had to turn around? Curious how common these gear issues are with long-haul aircraft.
