Living without health insurance works… until it really doesn’t

Plenty of digital nomads do this, especially in places like Thailand or the Philippines where day to day healthcare feels cheap and accessible. So no, you’re definitely not the only one.

That said, the reason everyone keeps telling you it’s a bad idea is because the downside is brutal. You can go months or years being fine, and then one accident, infection, or random surgery wipes out way more than you ever saved. China in particular can get expensive fast if you end up in a private hospital.

A lot of nomads don’t insure for routine stuff, they insure for disaster. Evacuation, major injury, anything that forces you into an international hospital. It’s boring, but it’s also the difference between an inconvenience and a life changing financial mess.

You can take the risk. Just know it’s not a clever hack, it’s a gamble.
