Hello,
I’ve noticed on many daytime flights that the cabin lights are often dimmed shortly after takeoff, sometimes making the cabin feel very dark even when it is still broad daylight outside.
I’m curious about the reasoning behind this. A few decades ago this didn’t seem as common, so I’m wondering what has changed.
Is this mainly done to reduce glare for seatback screens and personal devices, even on aircraft that don’t have inflight entertainment at every seat? Or is it more related to passenger comfort, rest, or crew operations?
I’ve also heard different theories, such as it helping passengers relax or sleep more easily, or even making the cabin easier to manage, but I’m not sure how accurate those are.
Personally, I usually prefer aisle seats for convenience, but I sometimes feel awkward getting up when the cabin is very dark and many people are trying to sleep.
I’m also curious why so many passengers tend to sleep during daytime flights in general, especially on shorter segments.
Would appreciate insights from pilots, flight attendants, or anyone familiar with cabin operations.
