Traveling to Italy from the US in late September with a layover at London Gatwick Airport (LGW).
Originally, the layover was about 4.5 hours, so we planned to stay inside the airport. However, our flight was changed and now we arrive about 4.5 hours earlier than before, giving us a much longer layover.
Because of scheduling constraints, we could not rebook with another airline, so we have to work with this itinerary.
We are now considering whether it would be feasible to leave the airport for a short period to explore nearby sights, such as visiting a castle or walking around a nearby area, and then return to the airport about 4 hours before departure.
I am unsure how practical this is given travel time to and from LGW and whether it would be too risky with jet lag and airport procedures.
Looking for advice on whether this is realistic or if we should stay at the airport.
