I was involved in a multi-vehicle accident on a highway during bad weather while driving a Hertz rental car. At the time of rental, I declined collision damage waiver (CDW) and only had liability coverage. No police report was filed.
For several months after the incident, I did not receive any communication. However, about four months later, I was sent an invoice from Hertz for approximately $19,000 in damages. Shortly after, an ESIS adjuster contacted me requesting a detailed statement and asked me to file a claim under my personal auto insurance. Unfortunately, I do not have personal auto insurance.
I also attempted to rely on my credit card rental coverage, but the claim was denied due to time limitations in their policy.
I have not yet responded to Hertz or the adjuster. Given my current situation as a graduate student without employment, I am trying to understand how best to proceed, including whether it is possible to negotiate the amount, set up a payment plan, or otherwise reduce my financial liability.
Any advice on how to handle this situation would be greatly appreciated.
