I was really looking forward to the scenic cruising through Tracy Arm Fjord on Serenade of the Seas, but nature had other plans. A massive landslide on August 10 sent millions of cubic meters of rock into the water, triggering 10–15 foot tsunami waves and making the area unsafe.
Instead of the fjord, we headed straight to Juneau and got an extra five hours in port, which was a nice silver lining. Still, I was bummed, we’d been hoping to see the glaciers up close. The crew handled it well, and safety has to come first, but it’s a reminder how quickly itineraries can change in Alaska.
Has anyone else had their cruise plans changed because of landslides or other natural events?
