I booked a multi-segment itinerary with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flying Houston → Amsterdam → Nice on April 19, and returning Nice → Amsterdam → Houston on April 28. My plans have since changed, and I no longer need the Amsterdam → Nice segment.
The problem is that the airline is asking for a very high change fee (around $2,000) to modify or cancel just that segment, which exceeds the cost of my original ticket.
I’m also concerned about my checked baggage, as I recently added baggage to the booking and I’m unsure whether it will automatically be routed to Nice if I skip that leg.
Additionally, I’ve been warned that skipping the Amsterdam → Nice segment could risk canceling my return flights or result in additional charges at the airport, though this hasn’t been clearly explained.
At the moment, I’m weighing difficult options:
Paying the high fee to modify the itinerary
Skipping the segment and potentially losing the return ticket
Completing the unnecessary leg to Nice and flying back separately
Customer support suggested that I still take the Amsterdam → Nice flight, collect my luggage there, and then return to Amsterdam to continue my trip, but this would be time-consuming and costly.
I’m looking for advice from anyone who has dealt with similar situations and how best to avoid losing the return flight or incurring excessive fees.
