Japan for a month solo… budget stays and tips?

I’ve finally decided I’m going to Japan, sometime between September and December, for over a month. Planning to backpack around solo and trying to figure out a realistic budget (not including flights).

Would love suggestions for cheap but clean and decent places to stay. Hotels, hostels, ryokans, anything that feels like a good value. I definitely want to experience traditional stays too, not just standard hotels.

Also open to any advice from other solo travelers. Must visit towns or smaller cities? Favorite food spots? How did you manage backpacking while also shopping without dragging huge luggage everywhere?

And what kind of daily or monthly budget should I roughly expect?
