I’m planning a first-time trip with my family to Tokyo in early June (7 days, 6 nights). I originally suggested staying in Ueno because I saw good reviews and it seemed like a convenient base.
However, my mom (56F) watched a YouTube video saying Ueno is very quiet at night and now prefers staying in Shinjuku instead. She wants somewhere more lively since we usually live in a quieter rural area in Asia and she is looking for a more energetic atmosphere, possibly staying out until around midnight.
My concern is that Shinjuku might feel too crowded and overwhelming, especially with the large station and busy nightlife. I also looked into Shibuya but it seems too expensive for our budget.
For those who have stayed in these areas, how “dead” is Ueno at night really, and is it still a good base for sightseeing? Or would Shinjuku be a better choice despite the crowds?
