Involuntarily denied boarding on Delta/Aeromexico return

Booked Delta tickets to MEX, operated by Aeromexico. Outbound was totally fine. For the return, I checked in the day before and had boarding passes in hand.


We showed up about 4 hours early and were told our seats weren’t guaranteed and that we were now on standby. This was for my whole family, four of us, with tickets bought way back in September for December travel.


Both Aeromexico and Delta were basically useless at the airport. Even though they kept saying every flight was sold out, I eventually found a flight to a city about three hours away, rented a car, and drove us home.


I filed a complaint with Delta since that’s who I bought the tickets from, and they replied saying I need to take it up with Aeromexico. Pretty frustrating and honestly disappointing.


Has anyone else been involuntarily bumped like this on a Delta partner flight?
