Flying IAH → DFW tonight and definitely taking the long way home, but I have to give United some credit for keeping the flight alive instead of just canceling it.
I’m based in DFW and regularly fly the IAH-DFW route, probably around 15 to 20 times a year. Weather in Texas can be brutal, especially when you get those large storm systems sitting right between the two cities.
A few years ago it felt like situations like this almost always ended with a cancellation and an overnight stay in Houston. I remember several times where I got stranded while coworkers flying other airlines still managed to get home. That was frustrating and definitely did not make United look good.
Lately though, I’ve noticed a difference. Instead of immediately pulling the plug, United seems more willing to operate heavily delayed flights or take creative routings to get people where they need to go.
Obviously nobody enjoys spending extra time in the air or arriving much later than planned, but I’d rather take the scenic route and get home than wake up in a hotel and lose an entire day.
Has anyone else noticed a shift in how United handles weather disruptions lately?
