This has always bugged me. Had a short hop from Krabi to Bangkok that we ended up not taking after switching airlines. Ticket was nonrefundable, airline confirmed there’s no money coming back, which is fine.
But if I’m eating the cost anyway, what’s my incentive to cancel? Why should I give the airline a chance to resell the seat and double dip? Feels like the money is gone either way.
Part of me wants to just no show and maybe give some random traveler the luck of an empty seat next to them. Am I missing some downside here?
Update: A lot of people mentioned standby passengers. I get that. But for a one hour hop like KBV BKK with tons of flights every day, are there really that many standbys? Genuinely curious how this actually plays out.
