I was flying United’s Dreamliner from Newark to Cape Town when the plane suddenly U-turned mid-air. About an hour in, the captain announced smoke had been detected in a cabin compartment. We dumped fuel and made a safe landing back at Newark. Emergency crews met us on the runway, and thankfully there was no fire, but it was nerve-racking.
This wasn’t the first time this route has had issues either there was another diversion earlier this month. I know safety comes first, and I’m grateful the crew acted quickly, but it makes me wonder how often these ultra-long routes hit snags. Has anyone else had a similar in-air diversion or emergency return experience? What’s your take on flying long-haul with recurring mechanical hiccups?
