I was looking for a durable backpack after retiring my old Samsonite after years of use on Frontier flights.
My main requirement was a bag with minimal internal organization so I could maximize usable space while still fitting Frontier’s personal item sizer.
I initially considered a Pelican hard-shell bag, but I was worried it would not compress well enough to fit.
I ended up choosing the RTIC Ultra Dry Backpack instead. On paper it is slightly deeper than the limit, but because the material is thick and flexible, it still compresses enough to fit into the sizer when it is not overpacked.
To make it easier to fit, I also used a cinch strap. The zipper design lets it open fully like a suitcase, which makes packing very easy.
It also feels weatherproof and sturdy, which makes it useful for frequent low-cost flights where I do not want to worry about damage or weather.
Overall, it has worked well for me as a Frontier personal item bag, especially for GoWild travel.
