I have an upcoming flight and have been hoping to upgrade to Delta One. Over the past month, I have been checking the upgrade prices several times a day and have noticed a pattern that I find hard to explain.
For the most part, both Premium Select and Delta One upgrade prices have remained fairly stable at what appears to be a baseline price. The number of available upgrades shown on the upgrade list has also stayed the same, so it does not seem like inventory changes are driving the fluctuations.
What I keep seeing are sudden spikes in pricing. For example, a Delta One upgrade that usually sits around $1,100 will suddenly jump to $2,800 or even $4,800. Then, when I refresh the app or reopen it just seconds later, the price returns to its normal level.
I have screenshots documenting this happening repeatedly. It seems unlikely that I am coincidentally checking during brief pricing updates every single time.
To me, it raises the question of whether this is simply dynamic pricing at work or a strategy designed to make the regular upgrade price appear like an exceptional deal. Seeing a price drop from nearly $5,000 to around $1,100 creates urgency and makes the lower amount feel like a bargain, even if that lower figure has actually been the standard price for weeks.
For context, the Delta One upgrade had been holding steady at $1,099 and Premium Select at $399 for roughly three weeks before recently increasing to around $1,199 and $549. I also noticed several people posting similar Delta One upgrade offers on other international routes last week at the same $1,099 price point.
Has anyone else observed this behavior? Do you think this is normal dynamic pricing, or does it feel more like a psychological pricing tactic designed to encourage people to upgrade quickly?
