How to actually make the most of frequent flyer programs while studying abroad

I’m studying abroad right now and flying long-haul several times a year since home is 15+ hours away. Flights get expensive, so I’m trying to figure out if it’s better to stay loyal to one alliance or just keep picking the cheapest options.

I’ve flown Qatar twice and have about 8,000 points, but that’s basically nothing. Should I stick with Oneworld to build miles faster, or just focus on saving cash each trip? Also not sure how to make the most of credit card points without paying huge fees.

Would love to hear how other frequent travelers manage it
