How Southwest Airlines is battling the heat on the tarmac

Southwest Airlines has introduced 60 refrigerated trucks at Phoenix Sky Harbor to protect supplies from extreme heat. This move addresses safety concerns after soda cans exploded in overheated delivery trucks during past summers. Ground staff now use thermometers and heat guns to ensure beverage temperatures stay within safe limits.

Rotating hydration stations and cool-down zones have been added to support employee well-being on the tarmac. Phoenix, one of Southwest’s busiest and hottest hubs, regularly faces temperatures exceeding 110°F. These measures are part of Southwest’s broader strategy to adapt to climate-related challenges and ensure safety.
