How do you actually know when it’s the cheapest time to book?

I’ve seen the “1 to 3 months before departure” rule everywhere, but within that window how do you know when you’re actually getting a good price?

I’ve checked Google Flights for trends and set alerts on Hopper and Skyscanner. Just wondering if there’s anything else people use, especially for Alaska flights.

Do you just wait for a sale? Watch the price for a few weeks and pull the trigger when it dips? Or is it mostly luck?

Trying not to overthink it but also don’t want to book too early and miss a drop.
