How are passengers chosen to be removed from oversold flights

For flight attendants or gate agents: when a flight is oversold and a passenger who has already boarded is asked to leave so another passenger can take their seat, how is that decision made?

As a passenger, is there anything I can do to reduce the chance of being the one asked to disembark and ensure I keep the seat and service I paid for?
