Hotel tried to undo my NUA upgrade at check-in

Had an interesting experience last year at the W San Francisco using Nightly Upgrade Awards.

I originally booked a Studio Suite for two nights and both NUAs cleared for an Urban Suite. The day before check-in I noticed my reservation had quietly reverted back to the Studio Suite.

I called Marriott and the agent contacted the hotel. They offered to return the NUAs and give me a one night complimentary upgrade to the Urban Suite. I accepted since I figured the hotel wasn’t eager to honor the upgrade anyway.

At check-in the front desk claimed there were no notes about any of this and tried to “upgrade” me to the Studio Suite… which was literally what I had booked.

I asked for a manager and pointed out that the Urban Suite was still available for booking online. The manager said if I could book it, they’d have to honor it. So I booked it on the spot and suddenly the suite was available.

Ended up getting the Urban Suite after all. Funny part is I ended up spending a lot at the hotel on dining and drinks because I loved the place.
