Just stayed at a hotel and got a message before checkout saying if all keys aren’t returned, they’ll charge $180 per key. These are RFID cards, not old school metal keys. The room itself cost less than that, which feels wild.
I’ve stayed at tons of hotels where losing a key just means stopping by reception for a new one, no charge. I get that metal keys or specialty fobs might cost something, but $180 for an RFID card?
What bothers me most is this was never disclosed at booking or when we checked in. Only got the warning message right before checkout. If I’d known ahead of time, I honestly might not have stayed there.
We didn’t lose a key, to be clear. I’m just trying to understand if this is actually reasonable or enforceable, especially when it wasn’t clearly disclosed upfront.
Curious if anyone else has run into this or if this is becoming a thing now.
