Hotel asked for payment again at check-in after booking online

My grandparents booked a Holiday Inn Express online using a card, but they weren’t sure if it was actually charged. When they arrived, the hotel asked them to pay again in full. They went ahead and paid since it was Christmas and they needed a room, but now they’re worried they might have been charged twice.
