I travel frequently and usually stay in mid-range hotels costing around 150 to 200 dollars per night, rather than luxury properties.
A recurring issue I have noticed is poor air quality in rooms, often with a musty or mold-like smell that can irritate my throat during the night. This does not always happen immediately, but it tends to become noticeable after some time in the room.
In my experience, very few hotel air conditioning units appear to be clean. I believe hotels should either ensure proper and regular cleaning of air conditioning systems or provide windows that can be opened for fresh air circulation. Even annual deep cleaning of AC systems would likely improve the situation.
This seems to be a widespread issue across many locations.
I recommend checking inside the AC unit with a flashlight during stays, as I once found visible mold growth in a well-rated chain hotel with thousands of positive reviews.
