I’m staying in a hostel and have a confusing situation with a roommate.
An older woman came back around 8:30pm and turned on the main light, which stayed on for a while. She also mentioned she had an online class at 9pm and was talking quite loudly in her bed, even past 11pm the previous night.
At around 9pm, I was on a phone call with my boyfriend using headphones and speaking at a low volume. At the same time, someone outside the room was also being very loud on a call and watching videos in the common area.
The roommate then asked me to be quiet because she was trying to sleep. I pointed out that it was still early, that others were louder than me, and that she herself had been noisy and kept the lights on late the previous night. She reacted quite strongly, which felt a bit hypocritical given the shared space situation.
I’m wondering if this kind of expectation is normal in hostels, because the timing and inconsistency feels unreasonable to me.
Later on, after 10pm, I could still hear her watching videos at low volume anyway, which made the situation feel even more inconsistent.
