Host asking to cancel a non-refundable Booking.com stay. Scam?

A friend booked a 2BR apartment on Booking.com, non-refundable. After booking, the host messaged him on Booking and then on WhatsApp asking him to cancel, saying the price was listed wrong and that they’d send the money back.


That immediately felt off to me. If the host made a mistake, they should cancel on their side, not ask the guest to cancel a non-refundable booking and promise a refund off-platform.


I already told him not to cancel and contacted Booking.com to flag it, but I’m curious if this is a known or common scam on Booking. Has anyone seen this before or had it happen?
