Host asked me to cancel 3 days before check-in… now everything is 3x the price

Booked a great place months ago, perfect reviews, whole spot to myself, breakfast included. Three days before my trip the host messages saying he’s sick and asks me to cancel so it stays in the free cancellation window. I’d already paid.


Called Booking and after getting hung up on twice, finally got someone who confirmed the host can’t take me. She sent me “similar price” options… but they were all dorms with multiple people. A huge downgrade from what I booked.


I asked for something equal to what I paid for, they said I can book it myself and send the invoice, but no guarantee they’ll reimburse unless a supervisor approves it. Meanwhile every comparable place now costs about three times what I originally paid.


Anyone dealt with this before? How did it end?
