Hit with a smoking fee at a Marriott and I don’t smoke. What now?

Stayed at a Sheraton in San Diego and got charged a smoking fee even though I don’t smoke. I rarely smoke marijuana and only at home, and definitely not on this trip or inside a hotel room.

When I called, they just said they could “tell” I smoked in the room. That’s it. No explanation. I’ve been Titanium and Ambassador and have never had this happen before.

How are hotels usually so sure about this? Do they actually have sensors, or is it just housekeeping reporting a smell? Should I be asking for proof or pushing back harder on this?
