I wandered into Granite, Oregon, expecting nothing more than a few crumbling buildings, but this tiny ghost town still has a heartbeat. Walking past the old schoolhouse, church, and weathered storefronts feels like stepping back into the gold rush days. With no stores or lodges open anymore, it’s pure self-sufficiency here but the wilderness makes it worth the trip.
Just 13 miles away, Olive Lake offers serene camping, fishing, and a beautiful 2-mile trail circling its Caribbean-blue waters. For a dash of history, I hiked to the Fremont Powerhouse, tucked deep in the Umatilla National Forest, where century-old mining stories meet peaceful forest trails. Granite might be small, but the adventures surrounding it are anything but.
