Just watched the NTSB hearing footage from the January crash between an American Airlines flight and a Black Hawk near Reagan Airport, and I’m still shaken. They released surveillance video and cockpit transcripts and seeing families in tears as it played was absolutely gut-wrenching. 67 lives lost, and now we learn the Black Hawk crew likely never heard the ATC’s command due to a mic overlap. Add to that altimeter errors and a failed earlier night vision test by the pilot... it’s a nightmare.
This tragedy really makes you think about how fragile safety systems are when tech and human errors collide. I’d love to hear others' thoughts: should there be stricter oversight for military aircraft in civilian airspace? And how can ATC and cockpit tech be made fail-safe for future mixed-use corridors?
