I travel frequently on long haul flights, around 10 to 15 times a year, and I have celiac disease. Because of this, I always request a gluten free meal right after booking. Despite doing this properly, 3 out of my last 6 flights did not provide my requested meal.
On two international flights to the US, I assumed it might be a catering or communication issue. On one of those flights, they initially said I had not requested a gluten free meal, but later found a suitable breakfast.
More recently, on a domestic long haul flight from Hawaii to the mainland US with Delta Air Lines, the same issue happened again. I could not eat the dinner, and the breakfast option was not suitable either. When I asked the flight attendant about gluten free options, they could not confirm if any meal was safe, which meant I could not risk eating anything due to possible medical complications.
I even called ahead before the flight to confirm my meal request, and it was marked as confirmed. While I do carry snacks, it is frustrating on 8 to 10 hour flights to not receive a proper meal. The main issue is that the airline allows special meal requests but does not reliably follow through.
Has anyone else faced this problem or found a solution?
