Currently in Haikou, Hainan, and ran into a big issue today. Booked a hotel on Trip.com, but they refused me at check-in because I’m a foreigner. The staff suggested another hotel, but it was listed as full on Trip.com and only bookable through Ctrip.
Problem was, I couldn’t register for Ctrip without a local phone number, so I got stuck again. Eventually found another place on Trip.com that worked, but it was a stressful few hours.
If you’re visiting China, I really recommend getting a local number. It makes things a lot easier.
