I recently had an issue while boarding a Southwest flight and wanted to share the experience.
I was traveling on an early morning nonstop flight (7 AM) and, based on the app, the flight did not appear to be full with available overhead bin space. However, when boarding in a later group (group 7), I was asked at the gate to check my carry-on bag for free. Even though I had concerns about needing quick access upon arrival due to work commitments, I felt pressured by the gate staff to comply.
After boarding, it became apparent that there was still significant overhead bin space available, enough to accommodate additional carry-on bags. This made the gate check feel unnecessary in hindsight.
As a result, I had to wait at baggage claim after landing, which caused a delay and impacted my schedule.
Overall, the experience left me frustrated, especially given that alternatives (like other airlines with slightly higher fares) may offer more predictable carry-on handling.
